NATURAL WINES BY LOS COMUNS
Los Comuns is the project of Jordi Escoda and Agustí Perelló, childhood friends from El Molar in Catalonia, Spain. The name comes from an old taunt: children from other Priorat villages called the kids of El Molar "los comuns". Their first 200 bottles came in 2010. Today they work around 3.5 hectares of owned and rented plots on the edge of Priorat and Montsant, mostly old bush vines on rocky llicorella slate. Carignan leads, with Grenache and a little Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grapes are picked by hand in several passes, and each plot ferments separately with native yeasts. Ageing happens in steel, clay amphorae or old oak, with no added sulphur. They bottle outside the official appellation, as Vino de España. Bateta is their rich, spicy red of Carignan and Grenache, aged around six months in used French barrels. Estrem is a fresher, partly carbonic take.
