Pinot Noir Hochegg 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Schnabel, in the Styria region in Austria. This red wine is made with Pinot Noir grapes, aged in old oak barrels and bottled without any added sulphites. Expect depth, energy and vibrancy here, as well as a sense of minerality and touch of spice from the Sausal soil that is special here, making this their most premium wine

Karl Schnabel and his wife Eva were so inspired by their time in Burgundy in the 90s (and their love for Pinot Noir) that they decided to focus mainly on red grape varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir - even though the Styrian winemaking region in Austria is widely known for its mineral whites.

We hear this wine is juicy with a bright acidity and underlying salty minerality, with notes of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and currants, as well as forest floor and a touch of spice.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

SCHNABEL

NATURAL WINES BY KARL AND EVA SCHNABEL

Karl and Eva Schnabel farm about 5 hectares of very steep slopes on the Sausal, the hill country near Gleinstätten in South Styria, Austria. It all began with a roadside inn opened by Karl's grandfather. Karl spent 1997 and 1998 in Burgundy, and from 1998 the couple replanted their Hochegg, Koregg and Kreuzegg parcels, mostly with red grapes in a region known for whites. The Sausal is older than the Alps, and its soils are weathered schist, silica and quartz with no limestone or clay.

They farm holistically, with homemade plant teas and rows scythed by hand. The grapes ferment on their skins in open vats, then rest in old oak for a year or more and are bottled by hand with no added sulphur. Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt lead the range. We have the Pinot Noir Hochegg 2023 and the skin-fermented Legionar 2021, a Sauvignon Blanc.
