NATURAL WINES BY RUDOLF TROSSEN
Rudolf and Rita Trossen are natural wine pioneers in the Mosel, farming their steep slate slopes naturally long before it was fashionable. They are based in Kinheim in the Middle Mosel and converted the whole estate in 1978. The holding is tiny and split over 16 small plots of grey and blue slate. Some of their vines are over 100 years old and ungrafted, because phylloxera never reached them.
Riesling is the focus, from the Purus range like Eule and Lay to the Dreiklang Spätlese Feinherb, plus a few pét-nats. Since 2010 the Purus wines have been made with nothing added, not even sulphur, and go under crown cap to keep them fresh. The rest get a small dose of sulphur at bottling. Eule Purus comes from 100 year old vines and ferments in a 1,000 litre wooden cask. A little Pinot Noir goes into the Purellus rosé pét-nat.
