NATURAL WINES BY ALESSANDRO VIOLA
Alessandro Viola makes wine around Alcamo in north-west Sicily, between Trapani and Palermo. He is a trained oenologist who worked across Italy and Europe, including with Donato Lanati. He has about 7 hectares, mostly in the Pietra Rinosa district inland from Alcamo, plus vines on Monte Bonifato above the town, between roughly 250 and 700 metres on limestone, sand and clay.
Fermentations are spontaneous, and the wines age in steel, fibreglass, oak or chestnut depending on the cuvée. Several, Note di Bianco among them, have no added sulphur. Grillo and Catarratto lead the whites, Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese the reds. We stock Note di Bianco, a pure Grillo. Also look out for Le Mie Origini, a skin-contact Catarratto, and his Blanc de Blancs, a metodo classico sparkling Catarratto.
