Canne 2017 is a 14% natural wine crafted by Aurélien and Charlotte Houillon Domaine Houillon, in the region in the Rhone region of France. More specifically in Faucon, in the Vaucluse. This wine is made with 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault and grapes. There is some element of the label being handmade too... as Charlotte herself is known to make paper and uses different natural pigments!
ONE PER ORDER
The term “canne” describes the small wooden spout fitted to traditional foudres, used to draw off the free-run juice. This bottling is entirely jus de goutte, sourced from 50–60 year old vines and macerated for around ten weeks. No added sulphites
This 2017 vintage of Canne (labelled with this name on the back) features a palate which is generous and layered, with a velvety texture and refined tannins. The aromatics are bright and expressive, lifted by subtle, savoury bitters that keep everything in balance.
There are bursts of nutmeg, dried cherries, a little smoke and a little spice, alongside hints of charred wood, Szechuan pepper all mingling amongst solid, chewy tannins that give it depth.
Finish in one night, as this zero/zero wine will unlikely hold overnight
About Domaine Houillon in Rhone
Aurélien Houillon, a native of Jura and another talented relative of Emmanuel Houillon of Maison Pierre Overnoy in Jura has also worked at the estate in addition to other places before settling down in Rhone to work alongside his partner Charlotte.
The wines are zero-zero so with no additions of SO2, as expected from the rest of the family legends, and offer a big energy and depth. They farm 2.5 hectares of vines in Faucon, in the Vaucluse, on a total property (and accommodation facilities) of 9 hectares. They farm their vines exclusively by horse too!
