Seyve-Villard is a unique natural wine by Didier Grappe, in the Jura region in France, becauser this white wine is made with Seyve-Villard hybrid grapes, which in our mind here taste a little similar to Melon d’Bourgone or Chardonnay, with a rounded mouthfeel, buttery touches and a stoney minerality. Drink in one sitting.

Didier Grappe and Hybrid Grapes

Hybrid grapes is something Didier Grappe is known for, one of the 2-3 producers in all of Jura with natural wine (alongside Domaine de la Touraize and Valentin Morel of Le Pieds sur Terre) who believes they are the future for Jura. For Didier, he hates to spray any chemicals or sulphur and copper on his vines, which Hybrid vines do not need, as they are resistant to diseases.

Didier has in fact said he will never plant another non-Hybrid vine in the Jura again, but will continue to farm his traditional Jura varietals. This Seyve-Villard is one of his most popular Hybrid wines.

NATURAL WINES BY JULES & DIDIER GRAPPE

Didier Grappe was an industrial mechanic before training in Beaune and returning home to the Jura to make wine in Saint-Lothain, where he now works with his son Jules. Their 4.7 hectares on red and grey marls grow Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Chardonnay and Savagnin, plus around 1.3 hectares of hybrids like Léon Millot and Seyve Villard that need no spraying. Didier has vowed never to plant classic Jura varieties again.

They use a basket press, ferment spontaneously in stainless steel, age in tank or old oak and add no sulphur. Everything goes under screwcap, and because Didier ignores appellation rules the wines are Vin de France, which is why his Savagnin is labelled Traminer. Good starting points are Pif Purple, a light red from hybrids, Les Insouciantes, a low-alcohol blend of Jura reds, and Chardonnay Longefin. For something older, try the oxidative Vin Yóne 2011.
