Axel Prüfer, the German-born winemaker behind Le Temps des Cerises, has built a strong following in the natural wine world, especially for his easygoing, light, glouglou-style reds. Based in the Languedoc, he primarily works with Cinsault and Grenache but recently expanded his vineyard by adding Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other varieties, which he is transitioning to chemical-free farming.
One of his most interesting projects is the evolving label of Avanti Popolo, which reflects his vineyard conversion process—each year, the design becomes more filled in as the vines become fully organic. Axel's vineyards, surrounded by forests (and even protected with human hair—yes, really!), produce unique wines like Les Lendemains Qui Chantent, Á Oilì Oilì Oilà, Avanti Popolo, and La Capitulation Ne Paie Pas!, his personal spin on a Brutal Wine.
