AMERICAN NATURAL WINE
AMERICAN WINES ARE HERE!
Whilst they can be elegant and serious, Natural Wines from the USA are generally seen as both fun, as well as interesting. Flavour profiles are generally different to what you will expect, perhaps especially as a lot of these producers below use grapes you will be familiar with in specific areas of Europe. For example, Italian Sangiovese or German Riesing, which when grown in the US climate and landscape, offers an obviously different perspective. With the main wine areas of California & Oregon being the top regions, hot producers in the USA include Joe Swick, Maloof, Subject to Change, Ruth Lewandoski, Martha Stoumen and Les Lunes (who also work under the name Populis).
Subject To Change
Our personal favourite producer from the USA is Subject to Change. They tend to source their grapes from nearby organic vineyards in California, which gives them a broad range and choice of grapes. Using no sulphur at any stage, their wines are always fresh, fruity and fun. Check out Twin Pyramids for a wonderful Muscat blend, or Cuvee 831 for a Chardonnay/ Pinot Noir mix with high energy, or Mixtape for a killer, refreshing multi grape red mix with a touch of Chenin Blanc in it.!
Joe Swick from Oregon
One of the USA's most popular producers is Joe Swick, who is based in Oregon. His range of wines are diverse ranging from more serious with his Willamette Vallet Pinot Noir to fun and quaffable, like his Only Zuul - a Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer blend taken from two different vineyards, one in Oregon and one in Washington...this one even has a nice smokeyness to it alongside lovely raspberry touches.
