Spätburgunder 2021 is a SERIOUS natural wine crafted by Carsten Saalwächter, in the Rheinhessen region in Germany. This red wine is made with Pinot Noir grapes made in a Burgundian style and is his entry level wine... but TRUST US THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF grown in Ingelheim and its limestone soils.
SERIOUSLY… how is this wine so complex at this pricepoint?!? Had there been a mistake at the vineyard? We literally doubled checked our prices when we first smelt this to check we got the right wine - this is absolutely incredible and we have never had a wine like this at this pricepoint.
A nose of life with hits of ash, vegetal pepperyness and wonderfully stewed fruit that is incredibly inviting. For a 12% Pinot this has some mild tannic grip that captivates and gives edge- this is no glou glou Pinot but at the same time the flavour profile is so perfect, mineralic and welcoming its also approachable … yet so complex?!?
10/10 one of the best value wines this webshop has EVER had. A wine for wine nerds… at an incredible price.
Saalwächter is a historic vineyard having first been developed by Paul Christian Saalwächter in 1853, who was the mayor of the limestone-rich region of Ingelheim. The winery is now run since 2017 by youthful winemaker Carsten Saalwächter who is being described as one of the most exciting German winemakers to shake up the natural wine scene, making elegant and gastronomic, precise wines that are getting Somms very excited in the best restaurants!
Saalwächter has plots in both Ingelheim as well as the very steep, slate driven slopes of Assmannshäuser Höllenberg which he describes as real Grand Cru plots. With experience in Burgundy as well as a love for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Casten Saalwächter is really showcasing a Burgundian style to his wines that is pushing low-intervention German wine to new heights.
