Himmel auf Erden 'Grand Cuvée' 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Christian Tschida, in the Burgenland region in Austria. This vibrant and crisp white wine is made with a blend of Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, of which the Grüner Veltliner in planted densely together grown on hard limestone soils.
The Sauvignon Blanc is more exposed, and both grapes are grown on his prized Leithaberg plots, which unlike most of his vines to the eastern side of Lake Neusiedl in Illmitz are actually on the other side of the lake, to the west and closer to Rust. Known for its wonderful Limestone soils, the Leithaberg is one of the oldest known winegrowing sites in the world, actually, with some evidence pointing to vines being grown here from the 8th century BC!
How Does Himmel Auf Erden by Christian Tschida taste?
This entry level white from the master in Burgenland deliver truly excellent balance between minerality and stone fruit. Absolutely sensational balance and drinkabilty.
This tastes like summer rain in a wet field, with notes of grapefruit zest, minerality and salt.
Whilst we are not following the rapper, fans of Action Bronson may have seen Christian Tschida enjoy drinking this wine both in New York and in his Burgenland vineyards recently.
Interestingly, we asked Christian Tschida why he decided to recently name the white himmel Auf Erden "Grand Cuvee" and he replied, because everyone was referring it as "the normal one" rather than the orange one, which is the Maischevergoren.
How is Himmel Auf Erden wine made?
Himmel Auf Erden Weiss 'Grand Cuvee' is aged in large, neutral oak barrels for around 10 months, with no added sulphur at any stage. This vintage has fantastic minerality, tangy acidity as well as delightfully addictive stone fruit notes, accompanied with a juicy mouthfeel.
Perfection? Well, it's heaven on earth as the label suggests!
