Who Are Koppitsch?

Koppitsch is Alexander and Maria Koppitsch, a family winery on the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Austria. The Koppitsch family has been making wine here for around five centuries.

Alex and Maria took over the vineyards from Alex's parents in 2011 and began making natural wine. They kept the same respect for nature his parents always had, and farm holistically, following Rudolf Steiner's principles, with the work done by hand.

They are smaller than many of their famous Burgenland neighbours, and in the early years they struggled to find importers. Today their wines are loved around the world, helped along when Dua Lipa declared her love for their Lemon.

Popular Koppitsch Wines

The easy-drinking side of the range is what Koppitsch call their Fun Wines: Homok (Hungarian for sand), Dió, Rét, Rozsa and Lemon. Homok will always have a special place in our hearts. Pretty Nats, one of our absolute favourites, is their rosé pet nat of Blaufränkisch and Syrah, usually full of strawberry, rhubarb and cream.

For something more serious, the Perspektive wines and Abendrot are precise, structured expressions of their sites, alongside Touch. AEON and A Quiet Soft Light are the rarer bottles at the top, and A Quiet Soft Light is another of our favourites. The range changes every vintage, so check the list below for what we have right now.

How Koppitsch Wines Are Made

The vineyards cover around six hectares near Lake Neusiedl, on a mix of limestone, clay and sandy soils. The lake moderates the climate, and the different soils give the family a lot to play with.

Over the years Alex and Maria moved away from single-grape wines towards wines that show where they come from. Their "KOPPITSCH goes SOIL" map links each vineyard and its soil to the wines made from it.

In the cellar the wines ferment spontaneously with their own yeasts. Some wines get a tiny dose of sulphur at bottling, and others none at all. Every step, from vineyard to bottling, is done by hand.
