Who Is Marto?
Marto is Martin Wörner, from Flonheim in Rheinhessen, Germany. Before founding Marto he made wine with Tom Lubbe at Matassa in Roussillon and with the team at Gut Oggau in Burgenland, then came back to his family's estate in Rheinhessen.
Today he farms around 10 hectares around Flonheim, together with his partner Alanna Lagamba of Vin de Lagamba, the woman behind Frauenpower. The rock drawn on every Marto label is a nod to Flonheim's sandstone.
Marto means a lot to us. His Weiss, first made in 2016, is the wine that converted us to only drinking natural wine, and we have stocked Marto ever since. We have also made three exclusive wines with Martin and Alanna.
Popular Marto Wines
Weiss was the first Marto wine, made from the grapes Martin inherited with the winery. It is a skin-contact white of mostly aromatic grapes such as Scheurebe, Kerner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, macerated for two to four weeks depending on the vintage, and always big and tropical. Manna is a co-fermented field blend of Scheurebe with the red grapes Portugieser and Regent, juicy and electric. Crazy Crazy is his pet nat, and B.A.D is 100% Dornfelder.
Martin's newer wines are moving towards a more elegant style with much longer time in barrel, such as the Riesling Reserve and Pinot Gris Reserve. Alongside them come Côte de Flon, the straight Riesling, and Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.
We also have exclusive Marto wines made only for us: MORE Marto Orange, a skin-contact Silvaner with a splash of Scheurebe aged in an old barrel gifted to Martin by Tom Lubbe of Matassa, and Blanc de Fuck, a Blanc de Noir from late-harvested Pinot Noir named after our bar. How Marto Wines Are Made
The vines grow on sandstone and limestone around Flonheim. The grapes ferment spontaneously with their own yeasts in the family cellar, then rest on their lees in large old oak barrels, usually between 1,000 and 2,400 litres, for six to ten months, without stirring.
More recently Martin has started giving some wines much longer in barrel, two or even four years on the full lees, which he sees as the direction for his still wines from now on.
No sulphur goes in, and neither does anything else.
