The domaine of Bariou-Bodet is not limited to vines. Livestock and other agricultural activity are part of the wider farm, including a flock of Solognote sheep that grazes between the rows and helps manage vegetation. Their presence reflects a broader approach to caring for the land rather than treating the vineyard as an isolated crop.
Fermentations begin with native yeasts and the cellar work remains patient and restrained. Stainless steel and neutral wooden vessels are used depending on the cuvée, with ageing often taking place on the lees and additions kept limited. The wines are fresh and expressive, shaped by Loire grapes and the varied landscapes surrounding Azay-le-Rideau. The diversity of soils and vine ages means the domaine can work with noticeably different material even within a relatively compact area.
Our favourite Bariou-Bodet wine? For those who love a rich, complex Chenin we highly recommend the Perruche 2022, which is aged for 3 years on the lees. This extended elevage gives the wine extra depth, texture and complexity while keeping the tension of Chenin. Here at 14.5% this is certainly quite a big boy, but it is worth it. Huge pops of baked apple, honey, white pepper and marzipan hints float alongside the creamy and very opulent texture. Very impressive!
